Jess likes sugar cookies. She likes them iced, sprinkled with colored sugars, and shaped like rocket ships and dinosaurs. Not so thin they break before you can eat them but not so thick they squish instead of snap when you bite them. Real butter. Genuine vanilla. Jess likes the perfect sugar cookie.

Sam likes Jess. He likes the way she flies her rocket ship cookies at his mouth and makes the dinosaur cookies battle each other before she laughingly bites off their heads and tails. So he mail-orders expensive vanilla and learns to bake because Sam thinks Jess is perfect.

Her first thought upon waking was the room suited her. The colors were ones she would have chosen for herself and pleasant scents lingered on the air.

She was hungry. That was her second thought. Her third, coming rapidly on its heels, was that she was far too ill to eat. Her fourth was of Merlin and his perfidy. Her fifth, arriving in a rush of angry tears, was of all she had lost.

Her sixth and seventh entered hand-in-hand, Morgause smiling as Mordred ran into Morgana’s waiting arms. All other thoughts vanished as she held him close and cried.

This is Ray's life now. Freezing his ass off in a 1972 Riviera with a broken window with a wolf panting in his ear while a mountie climbs a building.

"Get outta there!" The wolf looks up at him with those eyes and he almost forgets about the drool on his coat and the fur on his upholstery. "He'll be right back."

Diefenbaker licks his ear and whines.

"Great, I got a bored wolf." He nudges Dief's muzzle away from his ear. "Or a hungry wolf. You aren't going to eat me, are you?"

He rummages in the glove compartment and comes out with half a pack of Raisinets and some Cheetos. "Chocolate is bad for dogs. At least that's what Fraser told me. So you get the Cheetos and I get the Raisinets."

Dief finishes the Cheetos in two bites then goes back to leaning on Ray. "Bored, huh? Yeah, me, too. Radio?"

He spins the dial while the wolf watches and can't help but stop when he comes across Patsy Cline's "Crazy" because, yep, this is Ray's life now. Crazy.

"Yes. Great justice. Duty. Loyalty to a friend."

"Right." Ray scowled at the growling wolf. "Perhaps he didn't recognize me because I'm n--" He hit the floor with a thump as Fraser tackled him, pressing his hand firmly over Ray's mouth.

"Not carrying your handcuffs."

"Yeah, okay, just get off me, Fraser."

"Right you are, Ray."

"And make sure your wolf doesn't bite me."

A flush spreads across her face and leaps to his. Red as roses, red as the flag, red as the jackets they both wear when occasion--and duty--calls.

Duty being the important word. Not face, not flush, not red that stirs passions in his mind, but duty. To Queen and country, to friends and family. To never behave dishonorably.

Millimeters.

She's had coffee that morning, the scent of it merges with shampoo and perfume rising from her. He knows he smells of toothpaste, strong laundry detergent, and just a whiff of wolf, all drawn forth by the feverish perspiration beading his forehead.

She coughs, delicately, turns her head to the side before doing so, always careful of him, as if he is more fragile than she.

"Fraser?"

"Ma'am?"

"Duties, Fraser. Work to do."

"I do not want to know why that's important to you."

"It has to do with water pressure and splashing." Walter shook his foot as he zipped his pants. "Most especially with splashing. I seem to have miscalculated. Does anyone have a tissue? Perhaps I could use your jacket."

"You are not wiping your urine on my jacket!"

"Always such an uptight child. I had hoped you would become more relaxed as you aged. I could prescribe you something to help with that."

"You aren't that kind of doctor, Walter. Also, you're crazy."

"Right. Yes. Then I could make you something. I used to grow several very interesting plants. They had quite amazing properties. Astrid, did you bring my sample bags?"

"Yes, Dr. Bishop."

"Wonderful. Take a cutting from that plant there. And while you're at it, collect some of my urine. One never knows when one may need a bit of one's own urine."

"Look, Walter, I'm not eating that plant and I'm not carrying your urine."

"Don't be silly, Peter. Astrid is carrying my urine and the plant is for smoking."
